is relevant today, or why their most iconic song ("F*** the Police") resonates now more than ever, as if you don't know then you don't want to know ( this Onion article about sums it up). I am not going to waste your time explaining why a biopic about the origins of N.W.A. But, if I may, the most encouraging thing is how Universal is indeed treating this like a quasi-event film. Gary Gray in top contention to direct Black Panther for Marvel, as he almost ended up with Captain America: The Winter Soldier a few years back. The film will inspire a million think pieces, and it will (theoretically) put director F. I imagine the film will inspire would-be controversy due to its modern-day parallels and it will be accused of glamorizing its participants in a way that Walk the Line was not, but that will just keep it in the conversation. If Eminem’s 8 Mile can snag a $51 million debut weekend back in 2002, well, it’s not unreasonable to think that this much-touted and very-much-treated like an A-movie release can at least aspire to said numbers, perhaps with better legs to boot ( 8 Mile ended its domestic run with just $116m). I don't want to say that it will surely nab a $50 million debut when the time comes, but this feels like a "Nobody saw this coming!" surprise hit that everyone should have seen coming. The trailers, both the red-band teaser that debuted online back in early February and the green-band trailer that Universal attached to Furious 7 at the end of March, have played like gangbusters to audiences who are young enough to appreciate the history being told and old enough to remember said history in the first place. Dre, chronicles the meteoric rise of the groundbreaking hip-hop/rap group that helped break rap into the mainstream. biopic, which stars O'Shea Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell, and Corey Hawkins as (respectively) Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Dr. At the very least, every single moviegoer who saw Furious 7 last April (and probably a number of those who saw Jurassic World last month) saw the trailer for this one, which is the best marketing tool Universal had at its disposal. It is slotted in mid-August, which has often been the go-to spot for adult-centric counterprogramming that somewhat targeted African American audiences, think The Help and The Butler. Consider this my pick for the summer’s least surprising surprise hit. As such it will be interesting to see how this performs. and the musicians who made up its star trio. ![]() ![]() The film is of course charts the rise and fall, as well as the overall impact of N.W.A. The $25 million musical biography will go out in theaters everywhere on August 14th.
